References are good. Using real life reference is always considered best practice for studying color and light, because photographs can't depict the full color spectrum most (!) human eyes can see. Then again, photographs make it way easier
I want to make a case again for using references *without shame*. Using reference is a good thing! Artists have done this since forever, and I think not everyone needs to paint things that only exist in one's imagination. Take Caspar David
