So, #bartitsu (or #Sherlock's #baritsu) worked at the time in part because it trained people to use the stuff they carried every day for self-defense. I think to make it applicable to the modern world, the modern #edc needs to be considered
What “bartitsu” means
WikipediaBartitsu is an eclectic martial art and self-defence method originally developed in England in 1898–1902, combining elements of boxing, jujutsu, cane-fighting, and savate. In 1903, it was immortalised by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, author of the Sherlock Holmes mystery stories. Dormant throughout most of the 20th century, Bartitsu has experienced a revival since 2002.
