What “beetle” means

Wiktionary · Wikipedia

beetle[ˈbiɾəɫ]

  • nounA small car, the Volkswagen Beetle (original version made 1938–2003, similar models made 1997–2010 and since 2011)
  • nounAny of numerous species of insect in the order Coleoptera characterized by a pair of hard, shell-like front wings which cover and protect a pair of rear wings when at rest.
Full entry on Wiktionary →

Beetles are insects that form the order Coleoptera, in the superorder Holometabola. Their front pair of wings are hardened into wing-cases, elytra, distinguishing them from most other insects. The Coleoptera, with about 400,000 described species, is the largest of all orders, constituting almost 40% of described arthropods and 25% of all known animal species; new species are discovered frequently, with estimates suggesting that there are between 0.9 and 2.1 million total species.
