Having perpetrated some shell scripting, I naturally got irritated at the limitations and having to drive #getopt/#getopts by hand. So I am going to write my own replacement, just like everyone else. You may now call me an idiot.
@mirabilos It's not GNU anything at all. It's straight out of the BSD C library. It was added to #NetBSD in 2000, and has been included in the #FreeBSD and #OpenBSD C libraries for about 24 years. The OpenBSD import was done by @millert in

What “getopt” means
