RE: https://mastodon.social/@404mediaco/116483645020178045 Datacenters produce more infrasound than wind turbines and are deleterious to health of nearby human residents and fauna. "Datacenters Behaving Like Acoustic Weapons" — Benn Jordan
I'm investigating whether MEMS microphones can be used for DIY monitoring of low-frequency sound and infrasound around hyperscale #DataCenters. I'm considering a small run of breakout PCBs so the microphones can be tested sans SMT assembly.
It looks like my #infrasound monitor (a #RaspberryBoom) might have caught the sonic boom from a meteor that passed over the #Houston area this afternoon. Time is in UTC here.
What “infrasound” means
WikipediaInfrasound, sometimes referred to as low frequency sound or subsonic, describes sound waves with a frequency below the lower limit of human audibility. Hearing becomes gradually less sensitive as frequency decreases, so for humans to perceive infrasound, the sound pressure must be sufficiently high. Although the ear is the primary organ for sensing low sound, at higher intensities it is possible to feel infrasound vibrations in various parts of the body.
