  • You can rename or move a file that a program is currently using — and it’ll still work. #Linux tracks file #inodes, not filenames. Programs access files by #inode, so renaming doesn’t affect the process unless it reopens the file.

  • What if I told you that in #Linux, a hard link isn’t a shortcut — it is the file. You can delete the ‘original,’ and the link still works, because both point to the same #inode — the actual data on disk.

What “inode” means

Wikipedia

An inode is a data structure in a Unix-style file system that describes a file-system object such as a file or a directory. Each inode stores the attributes and disk block locations of the object's data. File-system object attributes may include metadata, as well as owner and permission data.

#inode across platforms

every network with a public tag surface

Follow #inode straight to each platform’s own tag page. Where a platform publishes open data we measure it above; the rest lock their numbers behind paid APIs, so we link rather than guess.

Every number above is measured from a named public API at the shown fetch time. Nothing is estimated or extrapolated. Platforms that lock their data behind paid APIs are not shown. Agents: the same numbers, as JSON, at /api/hashtags/inode
