There is a tradition that Mimurodo-no-Inbe-no-Akita (三室戸斎部秋田) lived in this area. Akita was godparent of Kaguya-hime (かぐや姫), the princess from the folktale 'The Bamboo Cutter' (竹取物語 'Taketori Monogatari'). Because of this, people pray here

It belongs to the Honzanshugen-shu, a branch of Shugendō loosely affiliated with the Tendai of Japanese Buddhism and its honzon is a hibutsu statue of Senjū Kannon Bosatsu.
