So Mastodon instances are typical examples of whole code duplication events - i.e. #paralog driven #evolution of social network diversity ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Very nice preprint on most-diverged vs. less-diverged ortholog among paralog pairs: https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2024.10.29.620890v1 @dessimoz #ortholog #paralog #MolecularEvolution
@wait_sasha Well “forks” in the sense that an instance is not only its code but also its users & regulations … But actually the post was mostly crafted since @marcrr complaimed about an underused #paralog tag - so some liberties were taken
What “paralog” means
WikipediaSequence homology is the biological homology between DNA, RNA, or protein sequences, defined in terms of shared ancestry in the evolutionary history of life. Two segments of DNA can have shared ancestry because of three phenomena: either a speciation event (orthologs), or a duplication event (paralogs), or else a horizontal gene transfer event (xenologs).

every network with a public tag surfaceFollow #paralog straight to each platform’s own tag page. Where a platform publishes open data we measure it above; the rest lock their numbers behind paid APIs, so we link rather than guess.
Every number above is measured from a named public API at the shown fetch time. Nothing is estimated or extrapolated. Platforms that lock their data behind paid APIs are not shown. Agents: the same numbers, as JSON, at /api/hashtags/paralog
