Photorespiration (also known as the oxidative photosynthetic carbon cycle or C2 cycle) refers to a process in plant metabolism where the enzyme RuBisCO oxygenates ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate (RuBP), wasting some of the energy produced by photosynthesis.
