What “reynisfjara” means
WikipediaReynisfjara is a popular black sand beach in southern Iceland near the town of Vík í Mýrdal. It is part of the Katla UNESCO Global Geopark on privately owned land. In February 2026, following weeks of strong waves and easterly winds, part of the iconic basalt columns collapsed along with significant erosion of the beach. With the return of westerly winds in March, Reynisfjara is expected to return to its familiar appearance.
