What “tambourin” means
Wiktionary · Wikipediatambourin
- nounAn old lively Provençal dance, common on the stage.
- nounA percussion instrument consisting of a small, usually wooden, hoop closed on one side with a drum frame and featuring jingling metal disks on the tread; it is most often held in the hand and shaken rhythmically; by extension, any frame drum.
The tambourin is a low-pitched tenor drum of the French region of Provence, which has also lent its name to a Provençal dance accompanied by lively duple meter music. The dance is so named because the music imitates the drum, usually as a repetitive not-very-melodic figure in the bass.
