  • Watching #Mastodon kick the crap out of my single core, 1GB VPS with multiple simultaneous #ffmpeg #transcodes. Load at 24. #btop uses lots of pretty colours so that's something, I guess. Ha.

What “transcodes” means

Wiktionary · Wikipedia

transcodes

  • verbTo convert from one encoding to another.
Full entry on Wiktionary →

Transcoding is the direct digital-to-digital conversion of one encoding to another, such as for video files, audio files, or character encoding. This is usually done in cases where a target device does not support the format or has limited storage capacity that mandates a reduced file size, or to convert incompatible or obsolete data to a better-supported or modern format.

#transcodes across platforms

every network with a public tag surface

Follow #transcodes straight to each platform’s own tag page. Where a platform publishes open data we measure it above; the rest lock their numbers behind paid APIs, so we link rather than guess.

Every number above is measured from a named public API at the shown fetch time. Nothing is estimated or extrapolated. Platforms that lock their data behind paid APIs are not shown. Agents: the same numbers, as JSON, at /api/hashtags/transcodes
