What are Ga4 Custom Dimensions in Looker Studio?

In Looker Studio, GA4 Custom Dimensions are user-defined parameters that allow you to collect and report on specific data that Google Analytics 4 does not track by default. They are essential for tailoring analytics to unique business logic, such as tracking interactions with Agentic AI agents.

Custom dimensions generally fall into two categories:

  • Event-scoped dimensions: These provide context for a single action, such as a session initiation or a specific AI interaction (e.g., tracking a `response_accuracy` score).
  • User-scoped dimensions: These describe traits of a visitor, such as their subscription tier or an assigned AI agent ID.

Once you have defined these dimensions in the GA4 Admin settings under Custom Definitions, you can map them into Looker Studio using the native GA4 connector. This integration allows these custom fields to be used exactly like default dimensions—ready to be dropped into charts, applied as filter controls, or used as criteria for segmenting data to gain deeper performance intelligence.

Note that standard GA4 properties are limited to 50 event-scoped and 25 user-scoped custom dimensions.
