Who's Building the Agentic Web

Autonomous AI agents now browse websites, extract data, fill forms, book services, and run multi-step workflows on behalf of their users. This report maps the companies making that happen: the frontier labs, the enterprise platforms, the automation veterans, the startups, and the businesses already running agents in production.

What is the agentic web?

The agentic web is the emerging paradigm where autonomous AI agents browse websites, process information, execute multi-step workflows, and take actions on behalf of users without direct human intervention. Key activities include web navigation, data extraction, form filling, booking, research, and enterprise process automation.

Foundational AI labs

These companies build general-purpose frontier models with web browsing and agentic capabilities baked in. Their consumer and browser agents are how most people will first meet the agentic web.

OpenAI

Operator

Released in early 2025, Operator is a browser-based agent that can see and interact with web pages to complete multi-step online tasks like shopping, booking, and research. It is built on the Computer-Using Agent (CUA) model, which combines GPT-4o vision with reinforcement learning for web tasks.

Focus: Consumer task automation, research, e-commerce

Anthropic

Claude Cowork / computer use

Claude can read, edit, and reorganize documents and interact directly with web and desktop interfaces. Agents use tools, browse, and take sequential actions; the "computer use" capability lets Claude control the cursor, click buttons, and navigate software.

Focus: Enterprise productivity, coding, document workflows

Google DeepMind

Project Mariner

Built on Gemini 2.0, Project Mariner navigates web pages, fills forms, and completes tasks via a Chrome extension. It was one of the first demonstrations of a fully autonomous browsing agent from a major search company.

Focus: Consumer browsing, research, task completion

Perplexity AI

Agentic search + automated browsing

Perplexity has evolved from a search engine into an agentic platform. Its "Buy With Pro" feature can autonomously find and complete purchases, alongside automated complex research and multi-step browsing workflows.

Every company on this list sends agents out to the web.

hashtag.org is the other side of that handshake: the place where YOUR business gets found, read, and cited by those agents. Structured portals, staked keywords, and an AI agent of your own that answers when theirs come calling.
